Rangers in for McDonald could mean the beginning of the end for Coulibaly

football.london report that Rangers are keen on signing Kevin McDonald from Fulham this month.

Steven Gerrard has completed a sensational 18-month loan deal for Bournemouth striker and Premier League legend Jermain Defoe, and is ready to follow that up with some midfield cover.

McDonald has been very much on the fringes at Craven Cottage this term.

The Scotsman, who has five caps for his country following his debut against Costa Rica last year, has made 10 Premier League appearances so far in 2018/19.

The 2016 signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers has made close to 100 appearances for the club, but he now has strong competition in the form of Tom Cairney, Jean Michael Seri, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Stefan Johansen.

The end for Coulibaly?

A successful move for McDonald could mean bad news for former fan favourite Lassana Coulibaly.

The Mali midfielder has struggled in recent months for the Gers, and looks a totally different player following his return from an injury earlier in the season.

Rangers fans were thrilled with his dynamic early displays, but he quickly tailed off and is no longer a nailed on starter for Gerrard.

Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have been his competition this term.

With Steven Davis also set to re-sign for the Gers, Coulibaly’s chances of getting regular minutes from here seem slim.

McDonald coming in would suggest that Gerrard is thinking twice about securing Coulibaly permanently from French side Angers.
