Graeme Murty certainly burnt some bridges with the Rangers fans toward the end of his reign as stand-in manager at Ibrox. The Englishman struggled to control his players as another campaign in Glasgow came to a messy end.
But despite all the academy man has done to upset Rangers fans over the past six months or so, one thing he did could prove to be a masterstroke for the Glasgow club.
“I coached him as a schoolboy. I was really surprised when I heard he was going to be able to leave the club.
“I was a bit shocked to be honest. Someone tipped me the wink but I’m not going to tell you who! I got straight onto the phone to Craig Mulholland and we made it happen.
“Glenn is desperate to be here. He’s a passionate Rangers fan and he ticks lots of boxes. Glenn is an exciting, pacy, left-footed player who can beat people and he can finish as well.”
– Graeme Murty after completing Middleton deal
In January, he pushed for the arrival of Norwich City winger Glenn Middleton. Murty had worked with the youngster during his time at Norwich’s academy and was a huge fan of his ability. As soon as he discovered he might be available, he pushed Rangers into bringing him to Ibrox.
The result was not immediate, but under new manager Steven Gerrard, it seems Middleton is set for an opportunity.

He bagged two goals for Rangers yesterday as they defeated Ayr 4-0 at Ibrox. It was an incredible performance from the 18-year-old, who has Rangers fans very excited about his future.
A boyhood Rangers fan, there is no doubt he could now go on and become a star at Ibrox for years to come, if his talent is nurtured correctly.
If that does prove to be the case, Rangers will have a lot to than Murty for.
