Rangers defender has told the Daily Record that striker Alfredo Morelos is up there with strikers he faced in Serie A, including Paulo Dybala.
The Colombian is in red hot goalscoring form. He has scored 25 goals in 28 games in all competitions, making him one of the most prolific marksmen in Europe.
Helander signed for Rangers from Bologna for £3.5 million in the summer (BBC Sport). The 26-year-old has put Morelos on a pedestal, backing the club to receive big money for the player.
He told the Daily Record: “Morelos is up there with anyone I have ever played against. I have played against some great strikers, all different types of players.
“I remember coming up against Paulo Dybala who was completely different, always dropping off then taking players on. Alfredo is a powerful guy who knows where the goal is.
“It’s hard to compare then but I was so impressed when I came in and saw him play for the first time.
“He is just fantastic. I am sure when we sell him we will get really, really big money for him but hopefully, it won’t be this season.”
The 23-year-old netted a brace against Feyenoord recently and smashed a long-standing record in the process. His 13th goal of the Europa League campaign eclipsed Henrik Larsson’s record for goals scored for a Scottish club in European competition in one season.
TBR Verdict – Helander is right, Morelos valuation is soaring
The uncompromising defender gets a close look at Morelos each day in training and the comparison is telling.
To put him in the same bracket with someone of Dybala’s ilk highlights just how good Morelos could be. The Argentine is valued at £102 million (Calciomercato).
It remains to be seen who will take a punt on the Rangers star and whoever it is better have some serious money ready.
Morelos’ goalscoring record at Rangers is nothing short of sensational. At present, he sits on 73 goals in 119 appearances.
Fetching £40 million might be ambitious but it certainly shouldn’t deter Rangers from trying, given Morelos’ stock right now.
