Rangers secured a safe passage into the quarter-final of the Scottish League cup as they comfortably beat East Fife 3-0.
Steven Gerrard’s men were rarely in danger of losing against the League One outfit. Goals from Jermain Defoe, Filip Helander and Joe Aribo eased the Gers through.
The Rangers boss opted to give some of his fringe players a run-out and in large it was a convincing performance from the title hopefuls.
In the next round, the Light Blues will face Livingston away and the Premiership newcomers are expected to provide a tougher test.
Central defender Helander started a game for the first time yesterday. The big Swede signed for the Gers for £3.5 million during the summer, switching from Bologna (The Scottish Sun).
The 26-year-old partnered George Edmundson in the centre of defence and the pair looked good in tandem. The man-mountain’s goal capping a dream first start at his new club.
Helander displayed a composed element to his performance and he could be a big player for Rangers this season.
Following his first start in the famous blue jersey, supporters took to Twitter to speak of his performance.
In large, the majority of people were satisfied with his showing and are looking forward to seeing him in action even more.
Here is a selection of tweets regarding Helander:
Lovely through ball from Helander. Reminds me of that classic Scott Allan pass from a bygone day.

Helander stepping into midfield there and nice pass into Defoe. Great turn and finish. 🔴⚪️🔵

Horrible conditions, but today was an opportunity for the likes of Stewart, Docherty, Polster, etc to give the gaffer something to think about. Not one of them took that chance.
Helander & Edmundson confirming CB to be a very strong position.
We need a LB urgently.

Edmundson and Helander have been OK too, but you'd expect that. Biggest disappointment today is Kamara.

Happy enough with that. Rather slack on the ball at times but professional enough for the most part and good to score a few more goals. Aribo, Foderingam and Helander arguably the pick of the bunch and good for some of the fringe players to get a run out. Onwards and upwards!

Boring game Halliday and Kamara have been rotten but Helander looks a player

Helander and Aribo were standouts as well as Fods

Job done. Helander and Defoe giving Gerrard something to think about.

Helander never put a foot wrong bill.
You’ve threw that in there at the end to keep others happy.

Seeing that Helander “was terrible” and Joe Worrall in disguise. That’s enough twitter for one day. The boy strolled it and was directly involved in two goals! 😂

Outstanding from Helander and Defoe 👏👏👏
