Rangers fans want Slavia Prague technician signed, after Europa League exit
Rangers were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday night as a tumultuous affair for many reasons resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Slavia Prague at Ibrox, 3-1 on aggregate – but Rangers fans were mightily impressed with one of Slavia’s players.
The Gers came into Thursday night’s match having earned an excellent draw away from home last week, securing an away goal through Swedish defender Filip Helander. However, Helander was dropped – being replaced by Leon Balogun.
It was a match full of moments. The first being Slavia’s opener, as Peter Olayinka headed home past Allan McGregor – a goal that Chris Sutton believes the veteran goalkeeper will be disappointed to have conceded. The ball flew in at McGregor’s near post.
The first flash point occured moments after Kemar Roofe stepped off the bench. Chasing a long ball, Roofe high-footed the opposing goalkeeper in the face and was shown a red card – deservedly so. Leon Balogun was then sent off for a second yellow.
From the resulting free-kick, Nicolae Stanciu scored a delicious curling effort. Glen Kamara was then racially abused after the match, confirmed by Steven Gerrard – but since denied by the Czech Republic side, though it looks ominous for Ondrej Kudela.
While Rangers were deservedly beaten, Steven Gerrard made it clear after the match that action needs to be taken against Slavia Prague and Kudela. But in terms of one of Kudela’s teammates, Stanciu certainly caught the eye – especially with his free-kick.
Rangers have always lacked a proper number 10. Scott Arfield has become more of a hard-working midfielder, Joe Aribo is a number eight and does not score enough goals to be a 10 – while Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi are better out wide.
The Gers need a playmaker, one that can create things out of nothing and Stanciu might be perfect. His form this season has been exceptional, having a hand in 18 goals during just 32 games – the Romanian has scored 12 goals and created another six more.
He is a proper player and given his efforts against Leicester and now Rangers, there are likely to be plenty of suitors interested in nabbing his signature come the summer. That is especially after three goals and two assists in eight European games.
Costing Slavia just £3million (USA Today) in the summer of 2019, Slavia will hardly be looking to charge an excessive fee for a player operating at the top of his game. Whether Rangers and Slavia would want to do business in the future is another matter.
Rangers fans, though, are keen and want to see Stanciu brought to Ibrox in the summer. Gerrard has a history of signing players that Rangers have faced in Europe – Borna Barisic for example – and adding Stanciu would be a proper coup. Fans agree.
Hope we sign Stanciu for the champs league
