Rangers take on Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday night as they get their group stage campaign under way following a play-off round win over Galatasaray – and Rangers fans have urged Steven Gerrard to recall a certain attacker.
The Gers are on fire at the moment with confidence at an all-time high. They come into the match after beating Old Firm rivals Celtic 2-0 away from home, thanks to an excellent brace from defender Connor Goldson.
But after more than two years at Rangers, Gerrard will know that certain players impress more in Scotland than on the European stage – and vice versa. He used a front three of Brandon Barker, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent on Saturday.
Against Standard Liege, though, Gerrard might be better off using a different option than Barker. While the former Manchester City man has finally come on this season, he is arguably not the best option to take on what will be a solid Liege side.
Instead, a bit more creativity is likely to be required. Ianis Hagi has started all three Europa League outings so far and has an impressive seven assists in 13 appearances this season – but remained an unused sub against Celtic on Saturday.
Hagi – who earns £19,000 a week at Rangers (SportRO) – has been left out of the starting line-up for the last three Scottish Premiership games. But some Gers fans believe he needs to be recalled against Liege on Thursday evening.
