Rangers fans share what they noticed about defender during win over Alashkert
Rangers squeezed past Alashkert in the first leg of their Europa League play-off clash on Thursday – thanks to a late Alfredo Morelos strike. But it was a frustrating night for the Gers, who should have scored more. Rangers fans, though, were impressed with Calvin Bassey and his crossing.
The Gers were tasked with beating Armenian side Alashkert, having suffered defeat to Malmo in Champions League qualifying. Win the tie, and Rangers will find themselves in the Europa League group stages for the fourth season running. But the Gers have made a poor start to the season.
A loss to Dundee United was followed by a Champions League exit to Malmo. A lack of major additions, and the fact they may have to sell to balance the books has worsened the situation. John Lundstram’s red card in first-half injury time did not help, as Rangers went into the break 0-0.
What are Rangers fans saying about Bassey and his crossing?
But in the second half, eventually, Alfredo Morelos scored – after going through on goal just before the 70-minute mark. It a game they could have scored four or five in, Rangers hold a slender lead and it is all to play for in Armenia next week. Bassey, 21, started on the left side of the defence.
With Rangers dominating, the likes of Bassey and James Tavernier were basically other attacking options. With Borna Barisic on the bench, Bassey had big boots to fill – but many Rangers fans believe his crossing was excellent.
