Martyn Waghorn failed to prevent Derby County from suffering a Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Aston Villa on Monday afternoon – and Rangers fans have sent messages to the former Ibrox striker.

Waghorn, 29, only managed to play 21 minutes of the final. Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn cancelled out Jack Marriott’s late consolation to book their place in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.

The striker, who joined Derby from Ipswich for £7.5million last summer (EADT), has endured a difficult spell under Frank Lampard this season. He has scored 13 goals this season, in 44 outings.

Waghorn posted a message on social media after the match, venting his frustration and anguish at failing to help Derby gain promotion to the Premier League in Lampard’s first season as manager.

He is still held in high regard by Rangers fans, after leaving the club in the summer of 2017 to join Ipswich. The ex-Leicester striker scored a whopping 44 goals in 78 games, helping Rangers gain promotion from the Championship.

Rangers fans reacted to his post on social media, with many feeling sorry for their former striker. Some are keeping their fingers crossed for the forward that he helps Derby return to the Premier League next time around.
