Rangers fans react to Scott Arfield’s display against Motherwell

A number of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to implore Steven Gerrard to give Scott Arfield a rest after his lacklustre performance in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Motherwell.

The Gers remain within touching distance of the Scottish Premiership summit. But they were given a scare as Well took a 1-0 lead at Ibrox. James Tavernier then missed a penalty for the home side.

Jermain Defoe would equalise. And Filip Helander would bag the winning goal late on to ensure that Rangers secured the three points.

But it was the kind of afternoon that Gerrard will probably not want to ignore. The warning signs were there, and some fear that Rangers will not be lifting the title if they play like that too often this term.

One of the players who has come in for criticism is Arfield. The Canada international has been a stalwart of Gerrard’s side. But some of the fans feel that the time has come to rest the midfielder.

Some have been quite scathing in their assessments of Arfield’s performance. They feel that he has not been anywhere near his best for some time, and they want to see a change.

Even those who have sympathy for the 30-year-old believe that someone else deserves a chance. They have suggested that he is not doing anywhere enough to have what feels like a guaranteed spot in the team.

And they have issued a warning to Gerrard that keeping Arfield in the team at the moment could come back to haunt Rangers in the near future.
