Jermain Defoe picked up a hamstring injury during Rangers’ 4-0 win over Motherwell at Ibrox in a pre-season friendly – and Gers fans have responded by urging the club to sign a new striker.

Defoe, 37, has enjoyed an excellent pre-season for Rangers – even scoring against Patrick Vieira’s OGC Nice in a 2-0 win during the Veolia Trophy. The Gers enjoyed a 4-0 win over Motherwell on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi, Joe Aribo and a Ricki Lamie own goal saw Steven Gerrard’s men cruise to a comfortable and convincing pre-season win. But Defoe, who came on the in 59th minute, suffered an injury.

It saw Defoe leave the pitch after 82 minutes, with what Gerrard described as a hamstring injury and the only “disappointment” on an otherwise pleasing night. It leaves the Gers with just one recognised first-team striker.

Alfredo Morelos remains first choice but with Florian Kamberi returning to Hibernian after a brief loan spell at Ibrox, Gerrard is now down to his last striker following Defoe’s latest injury.

Rangers fans have reacted on Twitter to the news that Defoe has suffered another injury, with it yet to be seen if the former England international will miss the start of the 2020-21 campaign. Many want a striker to be signed.
