A number of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to implore Steven Gerrard to give Greg Stewart a chance after he played for the development side on Tuesday and scored in the 4-0 win.
Steven Gerrard did not get too much wrong during the Gers’ Scottish League Cup final defeat to Celtic at the weekend. But there was plenty of criticism for his decision to leave Stewart on the bench at Hampden Park.
It was difficult to argue with the decision to introduce Jermain Defoe. But many supporters were left scratching their heads over the call to bring Brandon Barker on. The gamble certainly did not work out with Barker making little impact.
And Stewart has provided those disgruntled supporters with further ammunition. He won a penalty for Graeme Murty’s men as they beat Brentford B 4-0. It was Stewart who converted the spot-kick. He was replaced by Dapo Mebude at the break.
It was somewhat symbolic that Stewart’s goal came from a penalty after Alfredo Morelos’s miss against the Hoops.
Of course, a performance against Brentford B may not make Gerrard sit up and take too much notice. But given that he bagged a brace in his most recent first-team appearance at the start of the month, it is not difficult to see why plenty of Rangers fans want Stewart to be given more of a chance.
Some have asked for the summer signing to be in the team for Thursday’s massive game against Young Boys. They certainly feel that he should be ahead of the likes of Barker and Sheyi Ojo in the pecking order, and cannot understand why he is playing in a reserves game in the first place.
Here is what some of the supporters were saying after Stewart’s latest goal…
Should’ve played on Sunday

Surely Stewart is part of the squad Thursday night, I think he is in better form than Ojo, Arfield, Aribo & Barker in that wide spot

Greg Stewart needs to start on Thursday.

Why’s Greg Stewart playing in a reserve game? Of all the guys who’s been on the fringes of the first team he’s the one who deserves a chance to come on compared to ojo or barker
