Rangers failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead against Portuguese side Benfica at Ibrox on Thursday night as two late goals from Jorge Jesus’ side saw the scoreline read 2-2 at the last – and Gers fans have applauded striker Alfredo Morelos.
The Gers came into the match having secured seven points from their first three Europa League games, and knew a win at Ibrox would probably see Steven Gerrard’s side qualify. But it was not to be, when the full-time whistle blew.
Rangers did have a sign from their last encounter. Having led 3-1, Benfica came back to draw 3-3 with Darwin Nunez scoring an injury-time equaliser. This time around, Scott Arfield put the Gers ahead – before Kemar Roofe netted.

Following Roofe’s stunning strike, the Gers looked comfortable – until Haris Seferovic’s shot was inadvertently deflected into his own net by captain James Tavernier. Rangers had just had a penalty appeal turned down.
The drama did not stop there. Just moments after Tavernier scored at the wrong end, Pizzi scored a lovely goal for the away side after some very intricate build-up play. It saw Benfica draw level on the night, and on points.
Morelos, 24, has not been firing on all cylinders this season but still has seven goals in 17 games – and four assists. But the Colombia international’s work rate was stunning on Thursday night, and many applauded the £30,000-a-week star (AS).
