Roy Makaay will reportedly join Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the Rangers dugout at Ibrox – and Rangers fans are excited at the prospect of his arrival.

Van Bronckhorst, 46, returns to Rangers as manager for the first time since leaving the club two decades ago – as a player in 2001.

Of course, van Bronckhorst played for Rangers for three years – clocking up 117 appearances. He won five trophies, including two Premiership titles.

Now, he has joined – with reports claiming he has got a contract until 2025. Attention turns to who will be on van Bronckhorst’s backroom staff.

Plenty of reports have suggested current Guangzhou City boss Jean-Paul van Gastel. But the Herald say Netherlands icon Makaay will join.

The legendary striker – also 46, who scored 102 goals in 178 games for Bayern Munich, will join Rangers as assistant manager.

What are Rangers fans saying about Makaay as assistant boss?

Makaay is a brilliant appointment. The Dutchman played 43 times for his country and has also won two Bundesliga titles with Bayern.

Like van Bronckhorst, and Gerrard before him, the Netherlands hero brings with him an enormous reputation and calibre that will attract players.

His coaching pedigree is good, too. He was been on the staff at Feyenoord for nine years, starting as a scout – having finished his career there.

He has worked as a scout, an Under-19 assistant, Under-19 manager, Under-21 assistant, Under-21 manager and then as a first-team coach.

Rangers fans are excited at the prospect of his arrival in the coming days – with van Bronckhorst expected to be in attendance on Sunday.
