Lassana Coulibaly has had a season of two halves. During the first half of the 2018-19 campaign, he was a regular in Rangers’ starting eleven. Since the turn of the year, it has gone pear-shaped. So does he deserve a permanent deal?
The 23-year-old has started 14 Scottish Premiership fixtures for Rangers this season. Steven Gerrard has chopped and changed, with the club participating in the Europa League and both Cups.
But 13 of those league starts came before the turn of the year. He has managed to earn a place in the starting eleven, featuring for 64 minutes of the 1-1 draw against Kilmarnock at Ibrox.
Coulibaly turned 23 on Wednesday and Rangers wished him a happy birthday on their official Twitter account. But it remains to be seen if he will remain at Ibrox beyond his current loan.
The 13-time Mali international is on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 side Angers SCO. It was a surprise move given that Angers had only signed Coulibaly for £3.5million (Goal) from Bastia in the summer of 2017.
Rangers fans discussed the permanent signing of Coulibaly in the comments section on the official Rangers tweet, with some suggesting that keeping the midfielder would be a good move. Others think he should return to France.
I never realised how young Coulibaly was. Could be worth a punt as a squad player, has the right physical attributes and proved early in the season he can show quality.
