Rangers fans disappointed with Scott Arfield despite Progres Niederkorn win

Rangers earned a 2-0 first-leg win over Progres Niederkorn in the second round of Europa League qualifying on Thursday night – but fans were unimpressed with midfielder Scott Arfield.

New signing Joe Aribo scored his second goal in three games as the midfielder curled home an effort from the edge of the area, giving Rangers the lead in the 20th minute after some lovely build-up play involving Arfield.

The Gers dominated possession at Ibrox throughout the match as they exacted revenge on the side that beat Pedro Caixinha’s Rangers back in 2017. Another new signing made it two shortly after the break.

A short corner was picked up by Sheyi Ojo, and he curled a left-footed effort through a crowd of bodies to score his second in Rangers colours – after both Ojo and Aribo scored against St. Joseph’s in the first round.

Arfield, who turns 31 in November, started alongside Alfredo Morelos and Ojo, while Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Aribo were chosen to start in midfield. The Canada captain was replaced by Jordan Jones after 62 minutes.

Arfield looks set to remain at Ibrox ahead of the coming season despite being linked with a move to Premier League side Southampton. The Mail claims the Saints are considering a £3million bid.

Rangers fans were disappointed, though, with Arfield’s display after coming to expect such high standards from the former Burnley and Huddersfield midfielder. Just an off night, but Gers fans still had their say.
