Rangers fans criticise Steven Gerrard’s team selection in home loss against Celtic

The first derby match of Steven Gerrard’s second season in charge of Rangers resulted in a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Celtic.

Odsonne Edouard and Jonny Hayes clinched all three points for the visitors and it was a disappointing afternoon for the Gers, as Gerrard acknowledged post-match.

He told Rangers TV: “Not pleased with the performance at all. Across the board, we weren’t good enough today, as a team – I thought individually we weren’t good enough either.

“We take the responsibility and we take the criticism as a group, so I’m part of that. We’ll have to take everything that’s coming our way, take it on the chin.”

Gerrard left Alfredo Morelos on the bench in favour of Jermain Defoe – perhaps with the former’s disciplinary record in mind, but dropping your best striker for the biggest game of the season so far is a risk.

He also left himself without much natural width and pace, as Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield in those areas and it was that which really cost Rangers dear as they weren’t able to lay a glove on Celtic for much of the game.

The supporters on Twitter feel that it’s Gerrard who should shoulder the blame for the result – having cost his side before a ball was kicked, in truth – and it was a tough learning curve for a man who is still a young manager.
