Rangers fans applaud Filip Helander display in draw against Alashkert

Rangers scraped into the Europa League group stages with a 0-0 draw against Alashkert – and Rangers fans have applauded Filip Helander.

The Gers came into the match having beaten Armenian side Alashkert in the first leg of the Europa League play-off round.

In the blazing heat, Rangers’ task was made slightly easier when James Santos des Neves was shown a second yellow card on 39 minutes.

A bad week for Rangers has ended in an unconvincing performance from the Gers. But it is job done, in what was incredibly tricky conditions.

Celtic await Rangers on Sunday in the first Old Firm derby of the season. But there was one silver lining, the display of Helander on the night.

Partnering Connor Goldson at centre-back, the Sweden international was sensational in what was only his fourth appearance of the season.

Many Rangers fans applauded the defender, with one fan labelling him the Gers’ “only saving grace”.
