Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to offload goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the summer and bring in Croatian goalkeeper Marko Malenica for just £1million – but two Rangers players should prove to be a warning.
The Daily Star claim under-fire Lloris will be sold, making way for Paulo Gazzaniga to step up into the number one slot. NK Osijek goalkeeper Malenica will be brought in as a number two. Michel Vorm’s contract expires in June.
Malenica’s record seems strong, yet unremarkable this season. The 25-year-old has kept nine clean sheets in 34 appearances, conceding 35 goals. But at just £1million, he could be a cheap back-up option.
But Steven Gerrard’s Rangers should convince Tottenham otherwise – in the form of two summer signings the Liverpool legend made prior to the 2018-19 campaign.
Gerrard firstly splashed out £2million (Record) on Croatia international Borna Barisic from Malenica’s current side. Osijek president Ivan Mestrovic then stated that Rangers had paid Osijek £2.7million for Eros Grezda (24 Sata).
A combined £4.7million is an enormous figure for Rangers. Indeed, since they regained a place back in the Scottish Premiership in 2016, their most expensive signing has been Connor Goldson for £3.5million.
But neither Barisic or Grezda have impressed. Of Rangers’ 55 league and cup fixtures this season, Grezda has only played 17 times. The likes of Ryan Kent, Daniel Candeias and Glenn Middleton are preferred.
He simply has not got to grips with Scottish football, and an early exit this summer is not off the cards. Barisic has been slightly better, but injuries have seen him struggle to just 26 outings.
So, will Malenica be a good signing for Spurs? A goalkeeper may be a different story, but judging on Rangers’ duo Grezda and Barisic’s dismal campaigns, Mauricio Pochettino has to avoid the £1million goalkeeper.
