Rangers duo Makaay and van Bronckhorst post on Instagram as Gers secure 2-0 win over Sparta Prague

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has posted on Instagram after masterminding a 2-0 Rangers win at Ibrox over Sparta Prague on Thursday night.

Van Bronckhorst, 46, took charge of his first Rangers match – a crucial Europa League tie. Only a win would do, ahead of a trip to Lyon.

With just four points from their opening four games and level with Sparta in second and third, it really was a match Rangers had to win.

Van Bronckhorst’s 4-2-3-1 system worked. Playing slightly more attacking than Steven Gerrard’s 4-3-3 – there was a renewed energy, a better press.

Joe Aribo hit the bar, before Ianis Hagi played in Alfredo Morelos who finished first time. Morelos got a second, after a calamitous mistake.

Allan McGregor had to pull off a wonderful double save, but Rangers held on to three points and a clean sheet. Van Bronckhorst posted on Instagram.

What van Bronckhorst got right as Rangers win, Makaay also reacts

Hagi has been in and out of the side so far this season, but in the first half – he was electric. His work rate, his energy, his movement off the ball.

He looks like a real beneficiary of a change in manager. Morelos looked more confident and with Roy Makaay behind him, he will surely shine.

Rangers looked more of an exciting outfit, less defensive – throwing more bodies forward. Calvin Bassey was also superb at centre-back.

Legendary striker Makaay – who has joined Rangers as first-team coach at Ibrox – also posted a three-word message on his story.
