Rangers' dream January signing - Liverpool starlet Dominic Solanke

Steven Gerrard set about radically improving his Rangers squad during the summer transfer window, with mixed results.

But he has assembled a squad capable of offering Celtic a title challenge, both with his recruits and by overhauling the mentality of the club; installing belief at a club where doubt had reigned for too long.

Despite that, he still needs more. Celtic have begun to flex their muscles and will surely not bungle as badly during the January transfer window as they did in the summer, so Gerrard must respond.

No doubt the Englishman will be hard at work in the coming month, but who should be at the very top of his shopping list?

Much has been made of how Gerrard can use his Liverpool connections to get access to players at Anfield and he must do exactly that to bring Dominic Solanke to Ibrox.

Alfredo Morelos’ discipline issues and Kyle Lafferty’s inability to hit the ground running have robbed Rangers of the requisite firepower at times this season and an in-form striker can hide many of the teething issues Gerrard is still experiencing with his squad.

Divock Origi has now jumped ahead of Solanke in the Anfield pecking order, but the lack of gametime has not impacted his ability to find the net; as four goals in two games during the recent international break show.

Solanke has the ability to take Scotland by storm and kick Rangers on; he should sit at the top of Gerrard’s January wishlist.
