Rangers recently completed the signing of Barrow goalkeeper Andy Firth, which was seen as a strange signing by some fans.

On the club’s official website, Firth was unveiled as he penned an 18-month contract with the Scottish Premiership side.

Steven Gerrard knows the 22-year-old from their time together at Liverpool. Firth was coming through the ranks as Gerrard was a first-team player and then later when he was an academy coach.

But the deal is still strange, considering Rangers have picked him up from National League side Barrow.

And Gerrard has recently clarified Firth’s role, as per The Daily Record.

Gerrard said: “We’ve brought a young keeper in to replace Robby McCrorie because him and Andy Dallas have gone to Morton for some experience and games.

So we’ve brought Andy Firth in just for cover.”

The Rangers boss went on to clarify that he wants Wes Foderingham to stay and provide competition for Allan McGregor between the sticks.

Many speculated that Firth’s arrival could force Foderingham out of the door and that the ex-Liverpool starlet would be McGregor’s back-up.

But Foderingham was once again named on the bench for Rangers’ clash with Livingston and he remains a Gers player.

Gerrard sees Firth as a third choice goalkeeper, which makes Rangers’ decision to sign the young goalkeeper even more bizarre.
