Glowing Old Firm performance should make Nikola Katic a Rangers mainstay

Rangers defeated Celtic 2-1 in the Old Firm-derby yesterday to claim all three points at Parkhead for the first time since 2010.

Goals from Ryan Kent and Nikola Katic ensured Odsonne Edouard’s goal was in vain as Ryan Christie missed a penalty for the hosts.

Steven Gerrard’s team are now two points behind Celtic with a game in hand and his emotions ran wild after the final whistle yesterday.

Croatian defender Katic grabbed the headlines with his headed winner and Gerrard must now make him a mainstay.

Since arriving in 2018 from Slaven Belupo for £2 million (Scottish Sun) he has been largely forced to be patient when it comes to opportunities.

Last season he played just 14 times in the Premiership and spent the majority of the season behind Joe Worrall in the pecking order.

With the former loan signing now back at Nottingham Forest, that has opened the door for Katic. He has now started the last four games which have all resulted in victories for Rangers.

Gerrard signed several new players in the summer but his starting eleven is starting to settle down somewhat.

Katic will thank his lucky stars that he has been a pivotal part of a recent run of good form and this seems like his time to shine at Ibrox.

At 23-years-old, the Croatian has plenty of time left to develop but just lately he has showcased his credentials.

Against Celtic, he proved himself a man for the big occasions. He roared into tackles, was tenacious and showcased tremendous composure on the ball.

Gerrard has always spoken highly of Katic even when he was out of the team but the time has now come for him to hand the youngster a prolonged stay in the team.

Rangers could realistically win the title this season and end Celtic’s dominance.

With Katic bang in form at the back, it would certainly enhance Rangers hopes of ending the wait for major honours.
