Rangers should carry on Jake Cooper pursuit instead of bringing in Mark Beevers

Steven Gerrard has seemingly identified a new target in his hunt for a new central defender. The Daily Express reports that Mark Beevers has emerged as a new potential target for the Glasgow club.

The Bolton Wanderers man is being scouted by the Ibrox club as they continue their hunt for a new central defender. The club have already snapped up Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson but Gerrard wants another.

Beevers was a regular for Bolton last season. Nobody played more than the 28-year-old for the Trotters last season and he is a solid option.

It appears he is the alternative after Rangers failed to bring in Jake Cooper from Millwall. The London club have stood firm on the player, despite the Glasgow club making a bid of around £3 million for his services.

However, bringing in Beevers would be a big stepdown from Rangers. Cooper, at 23-years-old, is a bright spark for the future. Last season he was one of the standout centre-backs in the Championship and would have been a future star at Rangers.

Beevers, reliable as he is, is not a player that will take Rangers forward or any closer to Celtic in terms of quality. Cooper has the ability to grow and become an excellent addition. Beevers, for all his qualities, would just be another Rob Kiernan.

Rangers should keep trying for Cooper or give a chance to those already at the club, rather than bring in the Bolton stalwart.
