There have been rumours doing the rounds for the past week linking Rangers left-back Borna Barisic with a move away from the club.
Steven Gerrard has managed to get the best out of the Croatian international at Ibrox, despite some early difficulties in Glasgow for the defender.
Last season Barisic cemented himself as an important member of the Rangers first-team and Gerrard will undoubtedly be keen to keep him at Ibrox for the foreseeable future.
So talk of potential interest in the defender will have had some Rangers fans concerned, even if nothing concrete seemed to be present.
It was a question that was even put to the Rangers boss this week at his press conference. Gerrard was asked specifically about potential interest from Leeds United in Barisic, to which he gave short shrift.
“No (there’s been no contact from Leeds). Borna is focused here and has signed a long contract. He’s really settled, he’s in good form and we’re delighted to have him,” Gerrard told the Rangers press conference.
“Nothing has come to us in terms of that situation. But it’s no surprise because obviously he was in the running for player of the year last year, very consistent.”
Barisic is a key player for Rangers going forward and only signed a new deal at the club in January, extending his Glasgow stay until the summer of 2024.
Rangers would be right to demand a sizable fee for the international should they sell him but it would appear that Gerrard has no intention of letting Barisic go.
As for Leeds’ potential interest, it would appear that the rumours are in fact just that, rumours, with Rangers fielding no interest from the West Yorkshire club in the player.
