Steven Gerrard will not blame the astroturf pitch if Rangers lose to Young Boys. Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via the Rangers official account), Gerrard said that the pitch looks fine and that Rangers have experience on this type of surface.
Young Boys host Rangers on Thursday night in the group stage of the Europa League. Rangers already have one win in the competition but now face a tricky away test against the Swiss champions.
But Gerrard has avoided the temptation to get a pre-empted excuse logged. He does not believe the pitch is the problem as the Gers gear up for their clash with Young Boys.
Gerrard told the press conference (via @RangersFC): “The pitch looks fine on the eye, but look, astro-turf pitches are what they are and we just have to get on with it. We get enough games on them to be able to cope.”
There are three teams in the Scottish Premiership that use artificial pitches. Hamilton Academical, Kilmarnock and Livingston all have astroturf surfaces. So Rangers do have some experience on pitches like these.
It cannot be an excuse if Rangers slip up tomorrow. Although Young Boys will have more experience on the surface, Rangers have players that can make a difference. Gerrard knows that Rangers can win this if they play their best football.
