Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has commented on the recent reports linking Rennes defender Edson Mexer to Ibrox.
STV Sport had claimed the Light Blues had offered the star – who is out of contract at the end of the season – a deal to join the club ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

A source close to the Mozambique international said, as quoted by The Scottish Sun: “Rangers is an attractive proposition and the fact Gerrard travelled to Brittany showed how far he was willing to go to make a deal happen.”
It appears though that a deal is now unlikely after Gerrard provided an update when asked about the reports at his press conference.
After addressing the picture that has surfaced of the pair, the Liverpool legend said: “We are looking for centre-backs and Mexer is a good player who we admire but what I’m led to believe is that he’ll be playing his football in France next year. Don’t take that as facts, that’s just what I’m hearing through the grapevine.”
TBR’s view
Mexer has had a good season for Rennes, making 41 appearances in total for the club.

He has put in some solid performances at the back, and recently help the club to an unlikely Coupe de France triumph over Paris Saint-Germain.
The 30-year-old has good experience and would have been a shrewd addition for the Gers, who are set to lose loanee Joe Worrall and the out-of-contract Gareth McAuley.
