Rangers and Celtic-linked goal machine joins English club, £10m reported fee with add-ons

Reported Glasgow Rangers and Celtic target Ivan Toney has switched clubs, but neither Ibrox nor Parkhead will get to deploy the prolific striker in their ranks.

The 24-year-old was superb for Peterborough last season, scoring 26 goals in just 39 appearances in all competitions, despite England’s League One being cut short in March.

As Posh didn’t succeed in sealing promotion by the time the third tier was curtailed, it looked like just a matter of time before Toney was heading to a club higher up the pyramid.

In June, Peterborough Today claimed that both Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and Neil Lennon’s Celtic were monitoring the striker, with RB Leipzig also believed to have made enquiries.

However, Toney will continue to ply his trade in England, with English Championship playoff finalists Brentford confirming his signing on Monday.

Toney officially joins the Bees on Tuesday after penning a five-year deal for a reported initial fee of £5million which could rise to a maximum of £10million with add-ons.

“I’d like to welcome Ivan to the club,” said manager Thomas Frank. “We are adding a hungry, ambitious, hard-working striker to the group here.

“He fits what I want in a striker; he is a goalscorer, he gets into good positions in the box, he is good playing on the last line, and will contribute to our link-up play.”

Toney is undoubtedly a class striker who was destined for a step up, but with Rangers having signed Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, along with Celtic snapping up Albian Ajeti, those vacancies in Glasgow were filled.

While it’s a shame that Toney won’t be gracing the Scottish Premiership, joining Brentford is a good call too – they were on the verge of going up to the Premier League and many of their players have prospered at the club under Frank.
