TBR View: Transfer of £20m-rated Championship ace would be a poor tactical move from Arsenal
Well, Arsenal have been linked with a transfer for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
According to The Sun, the Gunners have made the Englishman a transfer target this summer. But, The Blades are demanding around £20m for the shot-stopper.
It’s being claimed that Mikel Arteta is open to selling Bernd Leno this window.
Meanwhile, second-choice ‘keeper for the second-half of last season, Mat Ryan, has returned to Brighton following his loan spell.
Arsenal are apparently in talks with the Seasiders over a permanent move to the Emirates Stadium.
Ramsdale was an ever-present in the Premier League for the Yorkshire outfit last season. However, his term was blighted by errors leaving questions over his ability.
Meanwhile, Leno didn’t enjoy the best of times with Arsenal, however, as per his usual self, he saved the outfit on numerous occasions.
As a matter of fact, most of his career in north London has been based around saving the team. He was especially phenomenal in his first two terms, winning second placed in the player of the season awards in 2020.
Ramsdale Transfer a tactical mistake
From a tactical point of view, signing Ramsdale as a replacement for Leno would be a horrible decision.
For starters, the 23-year-old is horrible with his feet. He averaged a meagre 43.4% pass accuracy whilst Leno was successful with over 75% of his passes last year.
His long balls average is higher. However, when you’re defending as deep as Sheffield United did, they’re a frequent occurance.
For a manager that demands ball-playing ability, targeting Ramsdale makes no sense.
Arsenal have already witnessed what happens when you don’t have a fantastic ‘keeper between the sticks. There was a period where Petr Cech and David Ospina were the two options, and the less said, the better.
From mistakes to his inability to play with his feet, a transfer for Ramsdale would prove a baffling move from Arsenal this summer.
