Ramon Vega gave his verdicts on Twitter after Celtic suffered a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at Parkhead, but Tottenham Hotspur eased to a 3-0 win over Austrian side LASK – praising new signing Carlos Vinicius.
Vega, now 49, enjoyed a decent playing career in which he spent four years on the books at Tottenham between 1997 and 2001 – the latter year of which he joined Celtic on loan, playing 26 times for the Scottish outfit.
The 23-time Switzerland international watched on as two of his former sides played their first Europa League group game. Celtic struggled once again, as Neil Lennon failed to get his Hoops outfit out of a tricky rut.
But Spurs cruised to a 3-0 win thanks to an own goal and strikes from Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min – with Vinicius laying on assists for both. Vega responded, hammering Celtic but praising £12.5m (Sun) loanee Diego Laxalt – while applauding Spurs and new signings Vinicius and Sergio Reguilon.
TBR’s view – What are the best both can hope for in competition?
Celtic watched on as Rangers reached the last 16 of the Europa League last season, and they will be hoping to reach that stage of the competition. But it might be difficult, after a poor start. They hardly put up a fight against Milan.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho will be targeting the Europa League as a source of silverware to finally end Tottenham’s lack of trophies that dates back to 2009. Spurs look well-placed to challenge, too.
