Ramon Calderon’s verdict on Gareth Bale’s future will leave Tottenham fans gutted

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has told Love Sport Radio that he expects Gareth Bale to remain with the Spanish giants, which will leave Tottenham Hotspur fans gutted.

The 29-year-old attacker’s agent Jonathan Barnett criticised Real Madrid fans for their treatment of Bale earlier this week. The former Spurs star was booed by fans after being substituted in the 61st minute of the 1-0 loss to Barcelona.

Bale has struggled this season in comparison to other campaigns at the Bernabeu. He has scored 13 goals and created five more in assists during his 33 league and cup appearances.

Comparing that to his first season at Real, Bale scored 22 goals and created 19 more in 14 games. But the ex-Southampton star is a long way from the fresh-faced star that joined Real back in 2013-14.

Though there has been no actual link or confirmation of interest from either parties, plenty of talk has been made about whether Bale could come back to north London and link up with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

His reported £650,000 wages provide an enormous stumbling block. Now, former President Calderon has stated that he reckons Bale will remain at Real rather than looking to leave in the summer.

“I heard the agent say he will stay, no way is there that he will leave,” Calderon said. “In any case, the rumours are said out of excitement. But he has problems with the players and the fans, so a solution is needed. Maybe a transfer.”

Bale scored 56 goals and created 58 more in 203 appearances for Spurs. He remains a legend at the club, despite pushing through a transfer to the Galacticos six years ago.

There was always little hope that Spurs would sign Bale. His wages are enormous even for the likes of Manchester United. So for Daniel Levy to pay £650,000 a week is ludicrous.

But Calderon – who knows how Real works – reckons Bale will stay. His comments will be a kick in the teeth for any remaining hopes of Tottenham fans that Bale could return.
