Ramiro Funes Mori being reinvented as holding midfielder

This summer Everton sanctioned the sale of Ramiro Funes Mori to Spanish side Villarreal. According to the Liverpool Echo, he made the move for a fee similar to the £9.5 million Everton paid to bring him to Goodison Park in the first place.

On paper, it seemed to make sense. Despite showing flashes of his form early on at Everton he had struggled in recent times.

A serious knee injury kept him out of action for a lengthy period. Prior to that, his form had dipped.

Everton sold the centre-back, replacing him with the yet-to-be-seen Yerry Mina, which seems an upgrade.

However, based on his early form with the Yellow Submarine, Everton might have missed a trick.

The La Liga side are operating Funes Mori as a defensive midfielder.

After struggling to get in the team at centre-back, something has been seen in the Argentine international that has prompted a positional switch. It now seems to be paying off. He scored his first goal for the club last night, earning rave reviews in a 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao.

Funes Mori is adapting to his new role with aplomb. Considering the current form of Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gana Gueye, maybe Everton have missed a trick themselves by pushing the Argentine further up field.
