Ralf Rangnick has told Sky Sports that Naby Keita is now getting close to his very best, and backed the Liverpool star to become an amazing player for the Reds.

Keita has had a turbulent time at Anfield. He is the club’s third most expensive signing of all-time, costing £54 million.

Unfortunately, for the large part of his spell on Merseyside, he has struggled to live up to expectations. And he has never quite been able to establish himself as a first-choice for Jurgen Klopp.

Of course, one manager who knows Keita well is Rangnick. The German was manager of RB Leipzig just before the Guinean’s arrival from Red Bull Salzburg. And he returned to the role just as he left for Merseyside. And obviously, he remained involved with Leipzig in the two years Keita was there.

Keita has appeared to turn a corner this season. And ahead of Tuesday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield, Rangnick backed the 27-year-old to kick on from here.

“He’s the kind of player who needs not only the attention of the manager, but everything has to be in the best possible way,” he told Sky Sports.

“And I think for him, it was difficult to get used to that new style of football, to the level of expectation. But as you said, my feeling is that this season he has been coming close to his very best.

“He’s getting more game time, more regularly playing also from the beginning, and he can still be an amazing player. At No 8, he’s one of the best we ever had.”

Naby Keita set to have big role to play as Liverpool continue to battle on four fronts

Liverpool still have a real chance of clinching an incredible quadruple. They have the Carabao Cup in the trophy cabinet. And they are into the FA Cup final and Champions League semi-final.

They also have a chance of winning the Premier League. With that, Klopp’s squad is going to be stretched. And that may mean that there is a good opportunity for Keita to make a big impact in the weeks ahead.
