Rafael van der Vaart is blown away by the quality of Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen and insists he should play a crucial role in the team.
After plenty of speculation about his future in the summer, Eriksen remained a Spurs player and is in his seventh season at the North London club.
The 27-year-old midfielder opened up about the possibility of exiting the Premier League side (BBC) and he’s also in the final year of his contract.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has only started him in two of the opening four Premier League games and he’s in an odd scenario.
Ex-Spurs favourite Van der Vaart has hailed the quality of attacking midfielder Eriksen and is hopeful he is a regular in the team.
“Hopefully Eriksen is going to play a lot. I hope [he will stay until the end of the season]. They need a player like him, he’s something special,” Van der Vaart said, as quoted by talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams on Instagram.
Eriksen’s situation does need to be resolved quickly behind the scenes, but for the meantime he should be restored to the XI on a permanent basis by Pochettino.
The creative playmaker is such an influential figure on the pitch when he’s involved and they definitely lack a spark in the final third without him.
Pochettino’s team need to try put a positive run of results together after a mixed start to the campaign and Eriksen can help them do that.
He has been directly involved in 153 goals in 281 games and Spurs would be shooting themselves in the foot to leave him out, even if his long-term future is unclear.
