Report: 'Electric' World Cup star Tottenham and Manchester United want could now sign new contract

Portugal World Cup star and current AC Milan ace, Rafael Leao, is wanted by Tottenham and Manchester United but he could now sign a new contract.

Leao has emerged as one of the top talents in Europe and he’s impressed so far in the minutes he’s been given in the World Cup for Portugal. Clubs said to be interested in Leao include Tottenham and Manchester United, while Chelsea are also thought to admire the tricky forward.

However, in a blow to all those English clubs, Calciomercato has claimed that AC Milan are confident that Leao will be signing a new deal at the San Siro. It’s claimed that there is still a difference between what the forward wants and what’s on offer. But overall, Milan feels a deal can be reached.

Lauded as an ‘electric‘ forward player, Leao will be hoping that having so much interest in him can give him the upper hand in contract negotiations.

Leao is believed to currently have a release clause in his contract of more than £130m. As expected, no potential bidder is going to want to pay such a fee.

TBR’s View: Leao new contract could be simply to protect Milan

Adding years to a contract is a good way for AC Milan to extract maximum value from Leao if they do decide to cash in.

Of course, why the player would sign that deal knowing the club might sell him is up for debate. But from a Milan point of view, it makes sense to get one of their biggest assets tied down to fresh terms.

Leao looks very much home on the world stage. He’s looked the part in the World Cup and there is little wonder so many clubs want him. Should he not sign a new contract, then the race will very much be on between United, Chelsea, and Tottenham.
