One of the stranger summer signings from Leeds United last year was that of Rafa Mujica. The Spanish youngster arrived from Barcelona B with a promising reputation from his time in Spain.

He arrived in July with a view to playing a role in Carlos Corberan’s under-23 side. However, just one month later, he was sent out on loan.

The 21-year-old joined the Spanish second-tier side on a deal until the end of the season. The Spanish club even reported on their official website that they had a purchase option in the deal for a player who had only just arrived in West Yorkshire.

That loan deal, however, did not work out. Mujica struggled to have an impact with the Azulgranas and his loan deal was cut short in January.

He was subsequently found a new loan destination, joining Villarreal’s B team of Spain’s third-tier.

He made his debut for the club last weekend, coming on as a second-half substitute. But this weekend, he started as Villarreal defeated UE Llagostera 4-1, and managed to score from close range to get his second loan spell off the ground running.

There was some excitement at Leeds when they signed Mujica. He had a good reputation from his time at Barca’s B team and was a former Spain under-19 international.

His time at Extremadura was a disappointment, but Leeds fans will now hope he can find his feet at Villarreal before potentially getting another chance at Leeds.
