Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez believes that if Ayoze Perez was more consistent, then he wouldn’t look out of place at current Premier League champions Manchester City.
Perez has sparked into life recently having begun the season slowly. The Spaniard now has five Premier League goals this calendar year and an assist to his name.
His form has picked up following the arrival of Miguel Almiron, and he is really helping push the Magpies towards safety once again.
His manager is certainly very happy with his contributions. He said, as quoted by Chronicle Live: “To be fair last season he scored eights goals and you can see he has the ability to a lot of time the right thing but sometimes he needs to be little more consistent. If not, maybe he’d be playing for Manchester City already!
“He’s really good in a lot of things but there’s things he can improve and he’s working on that.”
Perez certainly does have brilliant ability, but it is a fair assessment from Benitez that he needs to show it more consistently.
The 2014 signing from Tenerife has never hit 10 goals or more in the Premier League, and perhaps that statistic prevents him from getting noticed by the big clubs.
There has been some talk of Perez leaving at the end of the season.
Perez is still only 25, so arguably he has a few years until he reaches his peak, by which point he may finally be ready to play for a big club in Europe.
