Positioning is an often overlooked skill in a defender. Being in the right place at the right time to make a clearance can be the difference between winning and losing, particularly for those battling at the wrong end of the table.
As it stands, Bournemouth stalwart Steve Cook has cleared the ball the most in this season’s Premier League with 320 clearances, closely followed by the impressive Burnley duo of Ben Mee (300 clearances) and Michael Keane (246 clearances) who sit in 2nd and 4th place respectively. Ashley Williams of Everton sits in third, notching up 252 clearances during his solid first season on Merseyside and West Ham’s Winston Reid rounds of the current top 5 with 221 clearances.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Premier League leaders Chelsea are not represented in the top 20 of this list, potentially due to the excellent protection they receive from recently crowned PFA player of the season N’Golo Kante. The Blues’ highest representative is Gary Cahill, who can be found in 25th place with 147 clearances.
Steve Cook might lead the way this year, but can you name the all-time leaders in clearances since Premier League records began in 2006/2007?
