'Quality': Matt Targett says two Newcastle players have already wowed him in training

Newcastle United newcomer Matt Targett says Allan Saint-Maximin and Kieran Trippier have impressed him the most in training.

The 26-year-old joined Newcastle on January’s transfer deadline day on a loan deal from Aston Villa.

Targett was one of five new recruits at St James’ Park, alongside Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

Out of all the new signings, Trippier has made arguably the most impact so far.

The England international has played four times for Newcastle and has scored twice.

Sadly, Trippier will now be on the sidelines with a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

He has quickly become so important to Newcastle that Jermaine Jenas deemed the setback “disastrous”.

Meanwhile, Saint-Maximin is the Magpies’ talisman. A “powerful, tricky dribbler with an incredible first touch, ridiculous ball-striking ability, and the bravado of a gladiator who knows he has the crowd on his side” (Breaking the Lines).

On Wednesday, talkSPORT asked Targett who has impressed him the most out of the current Newcastle squad in training.

“I think Saint-Maximin, he’s so tricky and it’s hard to get the ball off him,” began the defender.

“Also Trippier, the leadership skills he has, the quality he has.

“They’re all top players… I’d say them two have impressed me the most.”

Targett enjoyed a good start to his Magpies career, playing the full 90 minutes in their 3-1 win over Everton.

He will hope to help Newcastle extend their gap above 18th placed Norwich on Saturday as they travel to West Ham.
