Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week following his impressive display for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at the weekend.
After overcoming Leeds United in a thrilling and nerve-wracking 4-3 win in their league opener, Liverpool then recorded a 2-0 win away at Chelsea on Sunday.
Mane once again shone for the Anfield side, his speed on the break leading to Andreas Christensen hauling him down and receiving a red card for his troubles.
The Senegalese went on to score both of his side’s goals after the interval, a fine header followed by a superb show of perseverance as he forced Kepa Arrizabalaga into a mistake and slotted home.
Mane’s efforts saw him named in the Team of the Week – the only Liverpool player to make the cut this last matchday.
“Won the match for Liverpool with his two goals,” Shearer wrote on the Premier League website.
“His quality and workrate made the difference when Chelsea went down to 10 men as he headed in brilliantly before putting pressure on a goalkeeper lacking in confidence, and getting his rewards.”
There isn’t much more that can be said about Mane that hasn’t already been said regarding his quality – he has been a star for Liverpool over the past few years, pure and simple.
Admittedly, the 28-year-old wasn’t at his best against Leeds, but he answered his critics in style against Chelsea and it bodes well for the next nine months as the Reds seek more silverware.
