Queens Park Rangers have endured a nightmare start to the new Championship season but signing James Collins could help fix that.
The veteran Wales international is searching for a new club following his release from West Ham earlier this summer and is understood to have been in attendance for QPR’s 2-0 defeat to Bristol City in midweek, sparking speculation that both sides could be chasing a deal.
Having conceded 15 goals already this season, including seven in a single game against West Brom, it is clear that Steve McClaren’s side need to bolster their defence and signing Angel Rangel is a step in the right direction.
The 35-year-old impressed in his debut against the Robins but it was clear that the defence was crying out for further experience at the back, which Collins would provide in abundance – helping QPR to build a line capable of bringing an end to their leaky displays.
“Not a good start to the season but still a long way to go! Togetherness, Belief and learning quickly from the mistakes will be key to change things around. Not the debut I wanted personally and collectively but we will keep fighting.”
– Rangel’s rallying cry after the midweek loss to Bristol City.
QPR also lack leadership and Collins can also provide that to McClaren’s youthful side, aided by Rangel, and the pair could provide the basis towards a push towards survival despite the woeful start to the campaign at Loftus Road.
With just over a week to go until the loan market closes, McClaren needs recruits across the field but defence is likely to be the difference between relegation and survival. The club cannot afford to make a mistake in the market and Collins should be a safe bet.
