‘Pushing this week’: Romano claims Serie A club in talks over ‘elite’ Arsenal player

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares.

The Gunners signed the 22-year-old from Benfica last season for a reported £8million.

However, he struggled in his maiden campaign at Arsenal, looking defensively vulnerable at times.

The most notable example was when he came off during the first-half of their FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.

With Oleksandr Zinchenko now an Arsenal player, this may well have pushed Tavares down the pecking order.

The Portugal Under-21 international has been linked with several clubs, including Brighton and Marseille.

However, Serie A outfit Atalanta are now reportedly leading the race to sign Tavares on loan.

Romano took to Twitter on Friday night to claim that La Dea are “pushing this week” for a resolution.

He also claimed Brighton are “asking for conditions”, while Marseille are no longer in the race.

Tavares has been deemed an “elite” talent, but maybe Mikel Arteta now feels he could do with more experience.

Or perhaps the Arsenal manager has seen enough from him?

One thing’s for sure – it’s looking increasingly likely that Tavares will be playing for another team next term.

Then, it remains to be seen what Arteta has in store for the player next summer.
