Leeds United forward Caleb Ekuban missed the decisive penalty as Ghana bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations. Ekuban’s penalty miss ensured that Tunisia progressed to the quarter-finals at Ghana’s expense in Egypt.
Ekuban was introduced as a substitute for Ghana during the match. On 75 minutes, Ekuban was thrown on as Ghana chased a late equaliser. They levelled in injury time thanks to an own goal and took the game to extra time.
Neither side found the winning goal in extra time so the game went to penalties. Tunisia substituted goalkeeper Mouez Hassen for Farouk Ben Mustapha right at the end of the game and this change proved pivotal.
Ekuban was the only player who missed in the penalty shootout. The 25-year-old Leeds striker stepped up and his tame penalty was saved by Ben Mustapha in the Tunisia goal.
It was a horrible moment for Ekuban, whose miss proved costly. Because of the Italy-born attacker’s miss, Ghana failed to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.
Ekuban’s future is up in the air after he spent last season on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor. Whether Marcelo Bielsa will give him a reprieve remains to be seen.
But he will need to shake this AFCON nightmare out of his head. Here are some tweets from Leeds fans reacting to Ekuban’s penalty miss.
