Paul Mitchell hasn’t had the best of starts as Newcastle’s Sporting Director.
The Magpies’ summer transfer window was underwhelming to say the least.
Newcastle didn’t make a single major signing in the summer, and the post-Dan Ashworth recruitment strategy seemed to be absent.
Of course, Newcastle were affected by PSR and a deal for Marc Guehi was blocked late in the day.
Mitchell has a lot to prove at Newcastle, but according to Brad Friedel, Mitchell will eventually do a good job.
Speaking on the Planet Premier League Podcast, Friedel spoke about Mitchell and his qualities as a Sporting Director.
The American has worked with Mitchell before at Tottenham, and he’s of the belief that Mitchell is indeed very good at what he does.

Paul Mitchell is a good Sporting Director
Friedel shared his verdict on Mitchell after previously working with him.
“They have had some change behind the scenes and I have worked with their Sporting Director before, Paul Mitchell, he’s actually very very good and he might need a little bit of time,” Friedel said
“He might need some time to assess the squad with Eddie and get used to him. The holes in their team will get patched up, I know how he works. I would be concerned by the chances conceded, but they have a team that knows how to deal with that.”
Paul Mitchell knows what he’s doing
Paul Mitchell may not have been able to spend all that much money this summer, but make no mistake about it, he knows what he’s doing.
Mitchell’s CV speaks for itself, every single team he has worked with has improved under his management, from Tottenham to RB Leipzig all the way to Monaco.
He’s made some very clever signings over the years, and once Newcastle’s financial situation clears up, he will surely do the same at St James’ Park.
Newcastle fans may just need to have a bit of patience with Mitchell.
