'Disappointed': BBC pundit slams Liverpool player for lack of energy at the World Cup today
Uruguay lost out to Portugal tonight as Cristiano Ronaldo and co secured their place in the second round of the World Cup.
Ronaldo didn’t score on the night as Bruno Fernandes helped himself to a pair. Of course, Fernandes was just one of a number of Premier League players on show in what was a game high on quality.
However, the quality wasn’t quite so high from Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez. Despite going into the tournament in good form, Nunez flattered to deceive against the Portuguese.
Nunez will have been hoping to get himself among the goals over in Qatar. However, he’s looked far from it as things stand. He must now hope he can help Uruguay get past Ghana or the South Americans will exit at the first round.
TBR’s View: Nunez not at the races
Liverpool fans have seen similar problems this season with Darwin. Some games he looks a real threat and at other times he just looks nowhere near the top striker they paid for.
For Uruguay, they need big performances from the likes of Nunez. He’s one of their star men and plays for a huge club in Liverpool where pressure is second nature.
Upson’s comments on him this evening were spot on. There was a lack of energy from the Reds striker and he simply has to offer more. Ghana, as we know, will be fired up for the crucial fixture.
Nunez, then, need to get back to the drawing board and go out all guns blazing.
