Liverpool are arguably the best team in Europe right now.
The Reds are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, while they’re also top of the Champions League as things stand.

Liverpool are looking brilliant this season, and their good fortune is down to the incredible performance of their star players.
Virgil van Dijk has been hailed for his performances this season, while Ryan Gravenberch has been compared to Patrick Vieira.
Speaking on ESPN, Shaka Hislop has been discussing who Liverpool’s most important players are.
A ranking done by ESPN had Virgil van Dijk listed as the Reds’ most important player, but Hislop disagreed, claiming that Mohamed Salah was a more important figure in this Liverpool side.
| ESPN’s 5 most important Liverpool players |
| 1. Virgil van Dijk |
| 2. Mohamed Salah |
| 3. Trent Alexander-Arnold |
| 4. Ryan Gravenberch |
| 5. Ibrahima Konate |

Mohamed Salah is more important than Virgil van Dijk
Hislop shared his verdict on which player is more important.
The pundit ultimately stated that the £34m attacker is more important than the Liverpool captain.
“I’m not too quite sure about this list. Three, four and five you can argue about. Mohamed Salah I would have ahead of Virgil van Dijk in this list. I feel like Liverpool aren’t Liverpool without Salah’s goals, so for me that’s a bigger piece, and there is a broader conversation to be had about contracts, and that is another day,” Hislop said.
“I would have Mohamed Salah at number one.”

Liverpool’s record without Van Dijk and Salah
Van Dijk and Salah have been two of Liverpool’s most important players for a long time now, and what is telling is the Reds’ record without both players.
Indeed, while Salah and Van Dijk are usually the first names on the teamsheet, they do have to miss certain games, and the Reds’ record without both players is very interesting to say the least.
| Liverpool in games without Virgil van Dijk* | Liverpool in games without Mohamed Salah* | |
| Games | 45 | 16 |
| Wins | 24 | 12 |
| Win percentage | 53% | 75% |
As you can see, Liverpool struggle a lot more when Van Dijk is absent than they do when Salah is unavailable.
Of course, these stats aren’t brilliant because Salah so rarely misses a game for Liverpool, but, Liverpool’s 53% win percentage without Van Dijk is worrying.
Van Dijk may well be Liverpool’s most important player, and that’s why the Reds need to get him to sign a new contract.
Van Dijk’s contract talks are going well, so hopefully, there will be some good news on that horizon soon.
