Pundit says ‘incredibly athletic’ Leeds player doesn’t get enough credit
Pundit Martin Keown has said that Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips doesn’t get the full credit he deserves.
Phillips, 25, has been a talisman in the Whites side during Marcelo Bielsa’s reign at Elland Road. Additionally, he’s now part of the England squad during this summer’s Euro 2020 competition.
The Leeds-born midfielder is so pivotal to the way his club side play, as he is the glue that holds it together in front of the defence.
However, he’s shown some flexibility on the international stage to work in a double midfield pivot, too.
Unsurprisingly, he’s got superb fitness, along with the entire Leeds squad, and covers so much distance each game he plays.
Keown believes that Phillips deserves more recognition.
“Phillips doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his passing and is incredibly athletic. He’s been instrumental in the midfield of an all-action Leeds side. He’s got an excellent defensive compass and knows where to provide cover,” Keown wrote for the Daily Mail.
Leeds ace Phillips can be surprise star for England
If you consider Jordan Henderson’s lack of football, surely there is a good chance Phillips starts England’s first game of the Euros this weekend against Croatia.
He only made his senior England debut in 2020, but he’s developed a lot in the last few months.
The deep-lying midfielder has so many strong defensive traits with his tackling, interceptions and positioning awareness. Also, he’s great with the ball at his feet.
England’s midfield will need to be at its very best in this summer’s tournament. Phillips is one guy going under the radar that may be crucial.
