Pundit Janusz Michallik has suggested the 36-year-old manager who would have everyone talking about Manchester United for the right reasons if he was appointed as Erik ten Hag’s successor.
There is real intrigue over what Manchester United will do this summer. It will be the first window where INEOS have the chance to get stuck into things at Old Trafford.
Many fans will be hoping for some big changes. And some have already expressed their belief that they would be surprised if Erik ten Hag was still in charge of Manchester United next season.
Ten Hag has struggled to silence his doubters this term. But if they do decide to move him on, the pressure will be on the decision-makers, particularly as it will be their first managerial appointment.
United have gone down a number of routes over the last decade. And you would imagine that they will not make a change unless they are convinced about the Dutchman’s successor.
36-year-old backed to be candidate for Manchester United manager’s job
There is not a huge number of outstanding candidates on the market right now. And speaking to ESPN, Janusz Michallik put forward Julian Nagelsmann as someone United should consider – insisting that the job he did at Bayern Munich is not looking so bad with the benefit of hindsight.
“He is proactive, he’s young. As we’ve said he’s always gung-ho. Remember, he was the youngest manager that came in. He’s had a bad spell at Bayern Munich. And now that we look at Bayern Munich, everybody’s asking questions, why was he ever let go. At the time, in the group-stage, he’d won all the games with Bayern,” he said.

“Bayern Munich has had issues. This is not something that you can put down to Nagelsmann. He wasn’t there all that long. The issues continued at Bayern Munich until this day. This is a team that usually bounces back immediately. So this is maybe generational. Whatever it is, teams like that go through it and you’d be hard-pressed to prove it to me that it was Nagelsmann has brought Bayern to where they are right now, because that’s not true.
“We see Germany. One game doesn’t make a difference, but to me, it does. So I think Nagelsmann is still one of those managers that is in the ilk of the ones I mentioned. And Manchester United, I think, should crave high-risk, high-press, entertain, be the team everybody talks about for the right reasons because they play good football.”
Plenty of clubs already on the lookout this summer
There may be a couple of issues if United do decide to try and target Nagelsmann in the coming months.
His contract as Germany manager is currently set to expire after Euro 2024. But there have been suggestions that there could be talks over extending his deal.
Meanwhile, two of the world’s biggest clubs are already set to be on the hunt for their next managers next summer. Both Liverpool and Barcelona are set for changes in the dug-out.
Nagelsmann may be on their radars. And if they look elsewhere, the clubs they potentially approach could then have their own interest in Nagelsmann.
Certainly, you would like to think that United will not make a rash decision while the jury is still out on ten Hag. There have even been suggestions that ten Hag has impressed behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
But Nagelsmann is someone who may get plenty of support from the fans if a change is made.
