Eric Dier played his first minutes of the season on Monday against Chelsea.
The defender had spent the entire season watching from the sidelines before Monday’s manic match against the Blues, and a number of dominoes had to fall for the England international to get his shot.
Cristian Romero’s red card and Micky Van de Ven’s injury led to the stars aligning for Dier to get his shot, but according to Nedum Onuoha, this will have been a reluctant substitution for Ange Posteocglou to make.
Speaking on Off The Ball, the pundit stated that he doesn’t think Postecoglou wants to use Dier, claiming that the gaffer has been trying to avoid using the £4m man so far.

Postecoglou has avoided picking Dier
Onuoha shared his verdict on the Tottenham defender.
“Eric Dier, I think he’s a good player, but it’s not great when you’re first minutes of the season are coming in the middle of November. That says a lot about the relationship that was there between Romero and Van de Ven, how well they were playing and how much potentially the manager doesn’t want to put you in the side. He’s a good player, I’m curious to see who plays alongside him and who plays at left-back as well,” Onuoha said.
Not in his plans
Make no mistake about it, Dier hasn’t been in Postecoglou’s plans so far, but on Monday it was an emergency situation.
With Romero and Van de Ven both unavailable for Spurs’ next few games, The Australian has a big decision to make here.
Does he go with Dier, a player who he clearly doesn’t want to be using, or does he risk it and choose youngsters such as Alfie Dorrington, who has been impressing as of late, and Ashley Phillips to fill this gap.
Postecoglou has had a smooth ride so far at Tottenham, but things are seemingly about to get a lot more difficult.
