Pundit now urges £42m player not to sign for Tottenham Hotspur in January

Kalvin Phillips’ Manchester City future remains up in the air as the midfielder struggles for minutes at the Etihad.

The so-called Yorkshire Pirlo has barely gotten a game since arriving at City last summer, and now, there are whispers that he could be leaving the club.

Tottenham Hotspur are one team that have been credited with an interest in recent months, but speaking on ESPN, Janusz Michallik has stated that Phillips shouldn’t join Spurs in January, claiming that he still wouldn’t get the necessary minutes if he were to head to north London.

Phillips shouldn’t join Tottenham

The pundit gave his verdict on the £42m player’s next move.

“Spurs, I’m not so sure. They have injuries at centre-back and with James Maddison, but that’s not a role he would play. They’re strong there in the middle of the pitch. If he wants to be at the Euros, if he went to Spurs, he wouldn’t be guaranteed first-team, no questions about that. I think at this stage if he feels he needs to leave it needs to be a place that guarantees him first-team. Spurs, for me, would not be a good spot to go at this moment,” Michallik said.

Wouldn’t get in the team

As much as we hate to add further insult to Phillips’ current plight, it has to be said that he probably wouldn’t get in this current Spurs side.

Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr have been utterly brilliant in the midfield for Tottenham so far this season, and with Rodrigo Bentancur set to return from injury, the competition for places is only going to amp up.

If Phillips joined Tottenham, he may find himself in very much the same position he’s in now, and that wouldn’t benefit him or his career.

Phillips ought to join a club where he’s guaranteed first-team minutes.
