Reported Newcastle United targets Odsonne Edouard and Alfredo Morelos would offer a “far bigger threat” than Magpies forward Joelinton, according to Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker.
The Daily Star claimed in March that Newcastle boss Steve Bruce had held a series of video meetings with the club’s transfer team and the Celtic forward was identified as their top target.
Amid reports of a takeover at St James’ Park, the Northern Echo claimed in mid-June that Edouard “is expected to be a leading target whoever is in charge”.
As for Morelos, the Rangers sharpshooter has also been linked with Newcastle, Chronicle Live recently reiterating interest and adding that Ibrox is looking for £20million for the 24-year-old.
Whilst analysing what the future could bring for Celtic and Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers, Walker also spoke about the two strikers’ futures and what they could bring to Tyneside.
“I covered Newcastle against West Ham for Sky on Sunday and I have no doubts at all that both Edouard and Morelos would certainly offer a far bigger threat than Newcastle’s Brazilian signing Joelinton, for example,” he wrote on Sky Sports.
“Remarkably, he cost the Magpies £40m and has managed just two league goals this season.
“Scottish football is a different marketplace of course, but sums of anywhere around the £20m mark for two top-class goalscorers will have both boardrooms on high alert.”
Edouard and Morelos were both head and shoulders above everyone else in the Scottish Premiership last season – the Celtic ace grabbed 27 goals and 19 assists, while his Rangers rival claimed 29 goals and 10 assists.
Joelinton hasn’t quite delivered in his maiden season, with just two goals and two assists from 33 Premier League games, although he does perform better when playing out wide in a deeper position.
That said, with regards to an out-and-out centre forward, the Magpies should certainly be looking at either of the Old Firm stars, who have proven credentials in front of goal and are ripe for the picking.
